Train for Behind-the-Net Play

One of the annoyances for any goaltender is when we allow a goal on a wrap-around from the short side. It happens to all of us; even the NHLers.

When you see a forward go behind the net, your first instinct is to slide to the far post, expecting a pass to the slot or a wrap-around. This instinct can be your downfall or your best friend, depending on the situation. The best way to plan for this common play is to train with the xCrease Goalie Slideboard.

Our goalie trainer, AJ, provides us with a look at how to prepare.

You can see that AJ uses the foot markers to his advantage, as they help him determine exactly where his feet should plant.

As you get faster at the short side movement, advance to what AJ does at the end of the video. Make a full move across the crease and do your best to increase your speed on each attempt.
