Numbers From Around the NHL

Tuukka Rask is playing great for Boston but a strong World Cup performance helped Zdeno Chara launch 16/17 in style. He is contributing 74.3% above his 15/16 per game average. The most significant change is his return to dominance in defensive play where he is back among the top 10 defensemen in the league.

Kris Russel was signed late in the summer by the Oilers, almost as an afterthought but has been their highest contributing defenseman and is among the top 10 NHL defensemen in defensive play.

Brent Seabrook started the 16/17 season with a per-game average contribution 94% higher than his 15/16 per game average.

Taylor Hall is contributing at the identical level with his new team in NJ but his contribution is surprisingly composed of a higher level of offense and slightly poorer defensive performance than he posted in Edmonton in 15/16.

Mika Zibanejad’s contributions are almost identical to those he made in Ottawa in 15/16 but he rates 8th among a very deep NYR forward group. He rated 4th among Ottawa forwards last season.

Matt Zuccarello is contributing 46.5% more than the second ranking NY Ranger forward, 36.3% higher than his 15/16 per-game average and is among the top 10 NHL forwards early in 16/17.

The New York Rangers are TP’s top rated team to start 16/17. They rate 3rd in offensivecontributions and 2nd defensively. The most interesting separation from the 15/16 to 16/17 Rangers is the boost in their forwards offensive performance along with the significant increase in their defense core’s defensive proficiency.

The TRUPERFORMANCE analysis model systematically captures player performance. This information reflects each player's in-game contributions. A contribution is made when a player either creates or denies an advantage. We refer to these contributions as PLAYS.
