Playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs was a dream come true. As a boy growing up in Toronto, I have many fond memories of heading down on the subway from Etobicoke and watching the Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens. I recall receiving my first Leafs jersey as a nine-year-old — it was a Pete Stemkowski one, but I could never wear it as the wool made me feel so uncomfortable. As a teenager, we all pretended to be Darryl Sittler of Showdown fame, and we would imitate him in our road hockey games.
It was an amazing and surreal feeling putting on that jersey in the spring of 1987 when I was traded to the Leafs, and would score in my first-ever game at Maple Leaf Gardens while wearing the home white jersey in front of the bright lights with my family and childhood friends who were also mesmerized.
